Gillian Balfour

Professor Gillian Balfour is a criminologist whose research focuses on the victimization criminalization incarceration in the lives of Indigenous women, the impact of sentencing law reforms in the areas of sexual assault, as well as prisoner re-entry. Her latest research examines the Ontario correctional system’s independent review and recommendations with regards to prison conditions and prison violence. She is working on a book entitled “Carceral Feminicidio: The disappearance of Indigenous women into prisons” (Emerald Publishing).

Crystal Dieleman worked as an occupational therapist with the Correctional Service of Canada for 10 years, primarily with men who have mental health concerns as they prepared to transition from prison to community life. She has been on faculty in the School of Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie University since 2006.  Her ongoing research looks across the spectrum of criminal justice, including mental health court programs, the criminalization of mental illness, the impact of living with a criminal record, and experiences of aging and being older in prison.

Retiring as an Inspector with the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service, one of the ways Ted Boynton stays involved in community safety is volunteering with Corrections Services Canada (CSC) and chairing the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) at Peterborough Parole. By observing, liaising and advising, this committee assists in educating the public in CSC practices and its mandate and ensuring our laws are respected and our community remains safe

David Byrne is Professor in the Community and Justice Services program at Centennial College in Toronto, Ontario. Previously David served as Executive Director for Peterborough Reintegration Services, an organization whose mandate is to assist offenders in their transition from federal institutions to the community. David is currently working towards a PhD in theology (ethics) at the University of St. Michael’s College while concurrently completing the Collaborative Specialization in Bioethics at the Joint Centre for Bioethics, both located within the University of Toronto. In his doctoral project David is exploring ethical issues in the treatment of sexual offenders after their release to the community.

Christine Cairns began her career in Corrections as a Probation and Parole Officer for the Province of Ontario before teaching, in Peterborough, at Sir Sandford Fleming College for 7 years in the Correctional Worker Program. As she ended her teaching career she joined the Correctional Service of Canada first as an institutional Parole Officer, before advancing through various positions to that of Deputy Warden of Warkworth Institution.  Christine remains with the Correctional Service of Canada, currently on Assignment as the Parole Officer Supervisor in the Peterborough Parole Office.

Jeff Morgan is a retired Peterborough police officer and has been the Case Manager of Haley House for 2 years. He first became involved with the Peterborough Reintegration Services organization in 2001.
